Southwest Allen County's eSACS Virtual School is a tuition-free online secondary school providing educational opportunities for full-time students in grades 6 - 12.

Students enrolled in eSACS Virtual School log in to their Canvas accounts on Monday mornings and receive a weekly module for each course they are taking. Each module identifies the learning targets for the week, then presents new content knowledge and skills delivered via digital lectures and assigned readings. Immediately following this instruction, students take an instant-feedback quiz to evaluate how well they have learned the material. When the students have demonstrated mastery, they go on to complete the assignments, discussions, activities and assessments designed to provide practice with and acquisition of the targeted learning. All weekly modules must be fully completed and submitted by Friday evening.

This type of online learning provides flexibility for non-traditional learners. Students can decide what to study first, where to study from, and when to do the studying. Because this is an online program, students can access the course from anywhere in the world, and at any time of the day or night.

Students benefit from the ability to set their own pace as they work throughout the week. Students can spend additional time on lessons they find challenging, and move quickly through topics they learn more easily. The flexibility of this online approach to learning also allows non-traditional students to attend school while meeting work, family, and other obligations.

Students must fully participate in the experience and complete their weekly assignments by the due dates, so that they can successfully acquire all of the content knowledge and skills that must be obtained prior to the end of the semester. Weekly modules are released, but will not unlock, until the student has fully completed the work assigned the previous week. Academic deadlines are strictly enforced, requiring students to stay on task and focused as they move through the semester's 16 sequential modules, as they are published.

All eSACS Virtual School courses have been created by a team of highly qualified, licensed teachers employed by the district as both in-person and virtual instructors. Students can contact their teachers by email or through Canvas Messaging if they have questions or need assistance throughout the week. Teachers are also available to meet with students via video conferencing during posted office hours.

eSACS Virtual School is a public secondary school. The online curriculum is aligned with the Indiana Department of Education requirements and students can earn a Core 40 Diploma or an Academic Honors Diploma entirely online. Any full-time student who is a resident in the state of Indiana may attend, tuition free.

eSACS Naturalization Exam Results, 2021-22

Background

In Indiana, each student enrolled in a U.S. Government course where credit is awarded for General, Core 40, Core 40 with Academic Honors, or Core 40 with Technical Honors designation is required to take the naturalization examination provided by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) as administered by the student’s high school. U.S. Government courses include Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, dual credit, and Cambridge International courses. Students do not need to pass the naturalization examination in order to pass the U.S. Government course. Retests are not required or published in the results. Indiana Code 20-30-5-7(d) requires, not later than November 1, 2022, and not later than November 1 each year thereafter, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) to report student data from the naturalization examination to the Indiana General Assembly.

Test Materials and Process

General information regarding the naturalization examination can be found here.  The 2020 naturalization examination contains 128 items. Students participating in the naturalization examination complete 20 of the 128 items. These items are presented orally by the U.S. Government instructor. The U.S. Government instructor is responsible for selecting the 20 items to present to students. A student score of 60 percent (12/20) is considered passing on the student’s first attempt. The total number of students, student scores, and student passing rates are collected at the school level for each semester or trimester the course is offered.

Reporting

Starting with the 2021-2022 school year, the Indiana Department of Education requires that all Indiana school districts publish naturalization examination results to the district’s website. Retests are not required or published in the results.
